Abstract: The cryptic style of Lun Yu is not merely one inherent feature of the Classical Chinese , it is also an im2 portant embodiment of Confucius’ profound ideas on education , philosophy , aesthetics and language itself1 Therefore , the translator’s representation of the language style reflects his understanding and identification of Confucius’ ideas1 This paper expounds the reasons behind this laconism and analyzes its relationship with translation diversity1 It is concluded that the laconic and ambiguous language style results in diverse versions of translation , which in turn compensates for the shrinking of space for interpretation caused by the employment of explicitation and expansion1 The fortunate outcome is that the readers can still appreciate the rich ideas included in sparse language
